Airtricity volunteers have a howl helping animal sanctuary

08 Aug 2013

Employees from Airtricity Gas NI, part of SSE Airtricity, had a ‘howl’ helping out at the Assisi Animal Sanctuary last week, as part of the company’s Community at Heart scheme.

Thirteen employees from Airtricity’s Belfast office rolled up their sleeves and spent the day working with the staff at Assisi helping to clean out the animal pens, socialising, playing and walking the sanctuary’s residents. The Assisi Animal Sanctuary is popular with Airtricity staff, with 33 employees volunteering time to the group over the last two years.

Airtricity employee, Aidan McGinn, who organised four visits this year, commented:

“Everyone at Airtricity really enjoys getting out of the office to support local community groups and charities. This is the second year that we’ve visited the Assisi Animal Sanctuary and we’ve established a really good relationship with their team; everyone really enjoys giving up time to help the volunteers.”

Elaine McCrory, Assisi Animal Sanctuary, added:

"The teams were a huge help and their efforts are really appreciated by everyone at the Sanctuary. Through Airtricity’s help, we’ve been able to complete a lot of the maintenance work around the site, such as getting the dog runs and garden areas ready for our Coffee Morning and Open Day at the Sanctuary on Saturday 10 August.”

Under its annual Community at Heart programme, Airtricity gives its entire staff the opportunity to take a day off from their usual work and donate it towards a day working with a charity or local community group of their choice.

Last year, Airtricity staff in Northern Ireland became the first part of the SSE group to reach a 100% rate of participation for the company’s annual Community at Heart programme.
