Last week, SSE employees took part in a Commonwealth Games 2014 Cycling Challenge to help raise funds for UNICEF.
Staff located at eight SSE sites across the UK pedalled for pounds to clock up as many miles as they could within allocated time slots. SSE incentivised the challenge by donating £1 for every mile up to 2014 and £2 per mile thereafter.
Over 1,000 employees took part, completing 4,767 miles and raised a staggering £7,522.80 for UNICEF in the process.
On the first day of the challenge teams at offices in Portsmouth, Cumbernauld, Perth, Belfast and Cardiff broke through the 2,014 mile barrier, reaching over 2,463 miles.
On day two, teams in Glasgow, Cardiff and Thatcham took to the stage and also trounced the 2,014 miles target with an impressive 2,304 miles
Aaron Glen, Community at Heart coordinator for SSE helped with the organisation of the event in Perth and said:
“SSE were keen to celebrate one year to the Commonwealth Games and raise some money for UNICEF in the process. After a couple of technical issues at the start of the day and in the spirit of teamwork, everyone made a great effort to get involved.
“Everyone who took part enjoyed themselves although some faces afterwards told a story, including mine after my efforts!”
Colleagues in Dublin also took part and managed a phenomenal 828.64 kilometres raising €1,657.28 for the Irish Heart Foundation.
