Pedal power helps SSE Ireland staff go the extra mile

31 Jul 2013

Staff at SSE’s Ireland corporate headquarters in Leopardstown, Dublin, got on their static bikes last week, cycling over 828 kilometres (514 miles) helping to raise more than €1,500 for the Irish Heart Foundation.

The cycle challenge, which was rolled out as part of SSE’s internal launch around its sponsorship of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, saw over 1,000 employees, at 10 different sites across the UK and Ireland, cycle more than 7000 kilometres (4,500 miles), resulting in more than €10,000 being donated to charities across the UK and Ireland.

Local Iron Man competitor and SSE Ireland Smart Metering Manager, Liam O’Riain, cycled an incredible 81 kilometres, raising a brilliant €150 for the Irish charity. More than 60 staff joined in the challenge at SSE’s Ireland headquarters, achieving a fantastic average of 6 kilometres per person.

SSE staff members in Dublin weren’t the only ones to get on their bikes in the name of charity.  More than 30 employees from the company’s Belfast offices at Airport Road and Great Victoria Street contributed around £200 to the final amount given to charities, cycling over 162 miles on the day.
