Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission plc (SHE Transmission) is progressing with major investment plans to upgrade the electricity transmission network in north-east Scotland.

Planning applications have been submitted to the relevant authorities with a combined cost of the proposed upgrades at over £450 million. The work involves:

  • Upgrade of the existing overhead electricity transmission line from Blackhillock, near Keith in Moray, to Kincardine in Clackmannanshire
  • Upgrade of the existing overhead line which runs from Rothienorman to Peterhead
  • Upgrade of the existing electricity substation at Kintore
  • Construction of a new increased capacity substation adjacent to the existing substation at Boddam, near Peterhead, and
  • Construction of two new substations at Rothienorman and Alyth in Perthshire

SHE Transmission’s East Coast Lead Project Manager, Derek Hearns said: “We are investing massively in upgrading the network in the north-east and beyond and this major programme of work will make sure that the transmission network meets the country’s needs for years to come. The submission of the final application for this work follows several years of surveys and consultations with communities.

“We will continue to talk to the communities to keep them updated and to let them know of the future benefits this work brings.”

SHE Transmission is investing heavily to upgrade and reinforce the network, with a £1.1bn capital investment programme that has the flexibility to increase by a further £4bn if required.
