Visitors fascinated by Foyers

25 Jun 2013

Last Saturday saw visitors from different parts of Scotland travel to the banks of Loch Ness to learn about pumped storage at Foyers Power Station.

SSE staff were keen to show off their ‘office’ on the banks of Loch Ness, and took visitors on a guided tour which involved learning about the control room and peering down the 50m deep shaft which houses the 2,150MW turbines.

Members of the public were also able to learn more about the history of hydro power through free DVDs and a ‘Hydro at 70’ historical timeline which gave an insight into how power was harnessed from the glens.

SSE’s Susan Duncan, who organised the event at Foyers, said: “It's great to be able to open up power stations which, due to operational safety reasons, would not normally be accessible to members of the public. Many have lived alongside these stations for years and to be able to give visitors guided tours and an insight into what happens in these huge and often very old buildings is a project which we hope to continue for many years. Often, employees come from the local areas so know the visitors personally which helps make the day special."

You can learn more about Foyers Power Station with the ‘Welcome to Foyers Hydro Scheme’ leaflet. For printed copies of the leaflet, please email media@sse.com.
