Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD) employees took some time out from their normal work duties to spread the word on the importance of electrical safety.

The Safe Highlanders and Safe Taysiders events, which ran throughout May and were attended by 4,500 school pupils, are designed to pass on essential life skills and combat crime in the local community.

Power workers from Inverness and Perth depots dedicated their time, as part of the company’s employee volunteering scheme Community at Heart, to facilitate workshops to inform and educate children about electrical safety.

Workshops included videos and practical demonstrations on the importance of steering clear of power lines and electrical equipment, the dangers associated with them, what to do in an emergency situation - with the overarching message to never retrieve any object from the electricity network.

SHEPD’s Melissa Matheson, said: "Safety is our number one priority, and these events are the ideal opportunity to spread the safety message to thousands of children that live in the Highlands and Tayside.

"The events enable the children to gain a lot of useful information about staying safe around electricity when they are out and about, and within the home too."
