A Greyhound Rescue Centre in Fife received a helping hand from staff at SSE recently as part of the company’s Community at Heart scheme.

A team from marketing and transmission projects in Perth spent the day at the greyhound sanctuary for homeless greyhounds that have come to the end of their racing careers.

Around 30 greyhounds are looked after at the centre by the founders, Celia and Jimmy Fernie, who set up the home in 2005. SSE staff were delighted to be able to help out with the enormous daily task of walking, feeding and bathing the dogs.

SSE volunteer, Lauren Knox said: “All the dogs are sweethearts. We felt we made a real difference to both staff and dogs…and there’s something for everyone to do, from walkies to DIY. The day was such a success we already have another team planning to return in the next few months.”

Colleague Janet Anderson added: “We were all delighted to help such a great cause. This is the third time our team has helped out at the sanctuary and we enjoy it immensely every time.”

Celia Fernie, manager of the Greyhound Rescue Fife, said: “We are really grateful for the volunteers’ hard work. Cleaning the spaces and spending some time with our dogs during the visit helps improve the facilities and lifestyles of the animals staying with us.”

SSE volunteers were able to help Greyhound Rescue Fife due to its longstanding employee volunteering scheme Community at Heart which lets every member of staff get a day away from their normal work duties to help out a local charity or community project.

Greyhound Rescue Fife is embarking on an ongoing programme of renovation and repair and is looking for volunteers to help. For further information and to volunteer help visit: http://www.greyhoundrescuefife.com/
