Alix Henvey

“Whilst studying for a degree in Social Work at university, I applied for a summer job in the call centre. I realised the course wasn’t for me and made the decision to work at SSE full time. I have never looked back. I was in the call centre for a short time before being offered the opportunity to work in Human Resources. I worked as an administrator for 3 years before taking maternity leave to have my first child. When I returned, I applied for a secondment as an Events Officer. This role was exciting, it opened my eyes to the world of SSE as I travelled around the UK supporting the Chief Executive with roadshows before returning to my role within HR with enhanced knowledge, learning and experience. In June 2014, I was promoted to a team manager role and in December 2019, I moved into the Transmission business where I’m currently a Workforce Development Manager. I act as a coordination point to align and prioritise key resource and development requirements. This was a big change for me moving from people management to strategic planning. During my time at SSE I have had two children and continued to progress and develop within my career. My own ambition and commitment to achieving my goals, coupled with SSE’s great support and flexible working has allowed me to maintain a successful career and be a mum to two young girls. I believe that SSE cares about their workforce and, in every role I have been in, there has been a strong focus on development. I have realised that you don’t always have to have the qualifications to succeed as skills are transferable and that is recognised here at SSE.”

“I am lucky to work in SSE Renewables and, in particular, the Operations side of the business where we get to see the islands in all their glory. From Shetland to Cork and everywhere in-between. I have a commercial background, a Quantity surveyor to trade and my first 4 roles in SSE were commercial with a close alignment to Quantity Surveying. The role I am in now as Head of Onshore Wind Operations and Maintenance was a great personal achievement as at the time, I was the first non-engineering background to be appointed Head of Business for an Operational business. It’s a great example of the progressive nature of SSE as an employer and the opportunity that is out there for everyone if you back yourself. SSE is a fantastic place to develop, I have had a lot of opportunity both on the job and academically that have really broadened my skills and mindset. There is a wealth of options but a couple of standouts for me personally were being sponsored through a Business Degree and also a structured Career development plan via HULT executive education at Ashridge College.”

“I started off in Energy Sales writing process documents and after just 6 months moved into a research and futures role in SSE Group. I took a winding journey through different roles in research and innovation and funding working with all the different SSE businesses before successfully applying for the brand-new role of Director of Customer and Stakeholders, forming and leading this exciting new area for our business. In terms of stand-out achievements, Taking our Transmission business from last place in environment and sustainability to the undisputed leader in our sector. Working with our business experts was really inspiring and it was great to see our hard work pay off and start to delivery real benefits for the environment and society. Some people think that all an energy company needs is engineers but we are a business at the end of the day and require all the commercial and creative work that any other business does. Some people also think that we’re male dominated. This one is still true, but things are changing. We now have 27% women on our Transmission Executive Committee and my own directorate is more than 50% women. I believe everyone makes their own success but at SSE I have been given the opportunity to learn and progress.”

“I joined SSE in August 2007 as an IT trainee on the company’s School Leaver Programme. After spending two years developing my understanding of the company I moved into Corporate Affairs, initially to help on a project to redevelop the company’s corporate website. 11 years later, and having experienced a variety of roles ranging from working in the press office, to helping set up a social media and graphic design team, I now manage a small function that is responsible for the group’s Digital Communications strategy. In my experience, SSE has always been a company that rewards hard work and effort – you have to be in the right place at the right time – but if you work hard and are good at your job, it doesn’t go unnoticed. People probably think that energy isn’t the most exciting of industries to work in – but with the climate emergency that our planet is facing there’s a real opportunity to make a difference in the world, and what’s more exciting than that? There are plenty of benefits that come from working at SSE. The company has an increasingly flexible approach to the way that it’s employees work, which means that it is easier than ever to have a good work/life balance.”
