Beatrice wind farm
In February 2009 the partnership of SSE Renewables (75%) and SeaEnergy Renewables (25%), was awarded exclusivity by The Crown Estate to develop the Beatrice offshore wind farm in Scottish Territorial waters. This joint venture partnership is 'Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited (BOWL)'.

The development site will cover an approximate area of 131.5km2 and is located, at it's closest point, approximately 13.5km off the Caithness coast, in the Outer Moray Firth, to the north of the two existing Beatrice demonstrator turbines. The proposed wind farm would have an anticipated capacity of approximately 920MW from power generated by around 184 turbines.

During the next year, BOWL will liaise with local authorities, statutory and non-statutory consultees and other stakeholders in order to undertake site specific consultations and environmental impact assessments before bringing forward a final proposal. As part of this liaison, the Beatrice offshore wind farm Scoping Report was submitted in March 2010 to statutory and non-statutory consultees to establish the scope of the environmental work required as part of the development of this site, and invite feedback from interested parties.

On being granted exclusivity for Beatrice in 2009 Peter Raftery, General Manager of UK Offshore Development for Airtricity, said "We are delighted that The Crown Estate has granted exclusivity to SSE Renewables and SeaEnergy to develop Beatrice. We believe that Scottish Territorial Waters represent an outstanding renewable resource and I look forward to the development of the site in consultation with key stakeholders."

Joel Staadecker, CEO of SeaEnergy said: "We are delighted with the outcome of the Scottish offshore wind application process. As one of the few indigenous Scottish offshore development companies, we look forward to working in partnership with SSE Renewables to help meet the Scottish Government's renewables energy targets.

These awards represent a significant milestone in SeaEnergy's strategy and the award will allow the SeaEnergy team to apply their significant experience, as world leaders in deep water offshore wind consenting, development and deployment."

Public Exhibitions

The next stage of the BOWL's consultation work on the project is to hold public exhibitions. The aim of these exhibitions is to provide local communities with the opportunity to learn more about the proposal, ask the project team questions and feed into the project with any comments at this early stage of development.
