Doing business responsibly

We don’t seek to maximise profitability in any one year but to maintain and develop a sustainable business that serves customers, employs people and pays dividends over the long term.

We are the UK’s second largest generation business, with an ownership interest in over 100 thermal and renewable power stations, with a total capacity of just over 11,300MW.

Generating electricity from diverse sources

We generate electricity from gas and coal and renewable sources like wind and hydro. This gives us the greatest diversity in fuels for generating electricity among UK generators and the biggest portfolio of renewable energy.

  • Our generation businesses

    We are the UK’s second largest generation business, with an ownership interest in over 100 thermal and renewable power stations, with a total capacity of just under 11,300MW. This comprises around:

    • 4,470MW of gas- and oil-fired capacity;
    • 4,370MW of coal-fired capacity (with biomass co-firing capability); and
    • 2,450MW of renewable (hydro, wind and dedicated biomass) capacity.

    As a result of this, SSE has the greatest diversity in fuels for generating electricity among UK generators. This means it:

    • avoids dependency on a single technology or commodity;
    • has significant optionality in the management of its power stations; and
    • can manage effectively the risks inevitably associated with primary fuel procurement.

    Management of primary fuel procurement risks is also assisted by the fact that SSE is the largest generator of electricity from renewable sources across the UK and Ireland
