Major projects
SSE is one of the largest investors in capital projects in the UK. The principal focus of this investment is renewable energy, but we have projects in thermal generation and electricity networks as well.
Generation
We are the UK’s second largest generation business, with an ownership interest in over 100 thermal and renewable power stations, with a total capacity of just over 11,290MW.
We are the UK’s leading generator of renewable energy, owning and operating almost half of the UK’s total renewable generation capacity, including the UK’s largest wind farm.
This comprises around:
4,470MW of gas and oil-fired capacity;
4,370MW of coal-fired capacity (with bio-mass 'co-firing' capability): and
2,450MW of renewable (hydro, wind and dedicated biomass) capacity.
The majority of this capacity is in Great Britain with the remainder in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Energy supply
SSE supplies electricity and gas to over 10 million customers in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.. We are the second largest energy supplier of energy in the UK.
Home services and contracting
As well as owning and operating one of the UK’s largest electrical and mechanical contracting companies, SSE also supplies a full range of gas and electrical installation services. Its shield gas boiler, central heating and wiring protection service has 400,000 customers.
